2024 SUMMER CUP WEEKEND

WELL READ! - Read produces a masterclass to beat hot field while Bailey proves too good.

Superb conditions greeted the players for Kingston Beach Golf Club's Summer Cup Weekend for the playing of the 73rd Bidencope Cup (Men's foursomes), 92nd Men's Summer Cup and Inaugural Women's Summer Cup.

Saturday afternoon saw 22 teams take on the course in the challenging foursomes format.  Young guns, Eli Monaghan and Edison Lee shot the round of the day, 73, to take victory in blustery conditions.  They finished two shots ahead of Nathan Gatehouse and Tom Wallace with the team of Paul Read and Josh Hill matching Gatehouse and Wallace's 75.

On to Sunday morning for Round 1 of the Men's Summer Cup.  One of the best fields seen in several years teed off early to take on the par 71 layout. Tasmania's Paul Read had the hot start in the morning.  Teeing off on the more difficult back 9,  Read had birdies on 12, 15 and 17 to go with his only blemish on 16 and sat 2 under through 9.  Defending champion, Dave Pretyman sat two adrift of Read at Even after 9 alongside Royal Hobart's Josh Hill.  Read continued his strong form with a further birdie on the difficult 8th to post an impressive 68.  Playing alongside Read, Hill stayed within striking distance with a front 9, 35 to sign for 71 and sit 3 behind.  Izak Sterling recovered valiantly after a 7 on the 11th to shoot 72 and take outright 3rd with a round to play.

The famous sea breeze off the Derwent welcomed the players back out onto course for round 2, The real storm however was due to the play of Harry 'The big Easy' Smith.  After a 74 in the morning, Smith set out after Read with birdies on 4, 5, 6 and 9 on his way to an outward 33.  Read held steady though, matching Smith with a 33 of his own.  Smith continued to attack and when his 10 foot birdie putt on the last found the bottom of the cup in front of the adoring gallery, a round of 8 birdies, 3 bogeys and a double added up to 68 and the best round of the arvo.

The metronomical Read proved unflappable in the afternoon.  His sole bogey on 13 had Read step onto the 18th tee 5 ahead.  With Thunderstruck playing in the background, Read epitomised his control by caressing his tee shot to 10 feet right of the flag and calmly two putted for victory.  An afternoon 70 to go along with his morning 68 for a 4 under total, 4 ahead of the rampaging Smith.  Hill continued to play solidly in the afternoon to finish with a pair of 71s and finish in a tie for second alongside 'the big easy'.

In the Women's event,  Tasmanian Open and Tasmanian Amateur champion Jorjah Bailey proved too strong to take victory in the Inaugural Women's Summer Cup.  Bailey outlasted Launceston Club Champion, Kirri Piper and Tasmania's Paulla Read to take victory by 6 with a round of 78.  Tasmania's Sally Miller and Kingston Beach's Viv McRoberts finished 4th and 5th respectively.

In the Men's net event,  12 year old young star, Wolfe Case-Boag of Kingston Beach shot his first round in the 70s for an afternoon net 64 to take victory by 4 over Harry Smith.  In the Women's net event, Sally Miller won by a shot over Orford's Penelope Jackson, McRoberts and Read.

Kingston Beach Golf Club would like to thank everyone for coming down to play in these events that mean so much to the club and are such a big part of our proud history.  We look forward to a bigger and better Summer Cup Weekend in 2025!
